Free toolkit helps foundations align billions in investments with health outcomes and sustainability goals
April 15, 2026 [Hamilton, Ontario] – Today, the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care (CCGHC) launched three new, free sustainable investment tools to help Canadian health care foundations align billions in long-term investments with health outcomes and sustainability goals. Developed with foundation leaders across BC, AB, ON, QC, and NS, the resources provide practical guidance to more clearly connect investment practices with organizational values (also known as mission-aligned investing).
Canadian health care foundations collectively manage over C$10 billion in investments. Yet, for many organizations, how those funds are invested, and their health mission have evolved separately. This can expose foundations to financial, reputational, and mission-related risks, presenting a significant opportunity to better align capital with care.
“Hospital and health care foundations hold capital in trust, not only for future equipment or infrastructure, but for the long-term health of the communities they serve” says Dr. Myles Sergeant, Executive Director of the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care. “As climate change is one of the defining health challenges of our time, that responsibility extends to how foundations invest. Donors, staff, and communities increasingly expect all capital to reflect the mission it’s meant to support. These tools give boards a practical way to start that work, moving from early conversations through to implementation.”
The Healthy Capital tools respond to a rising need across the sector. According to a 2025 Healthy Capital survey of 78 health care foundations, more than half (54%) of respondents have already integrated at least one environmental, social, or governance (ESG) factor into their investment policies or guidelines. These new resources are designed to build on that momentum, while also supporting foundations at earlier stages in their journey.
About the Toolkit
The toolkit includes three complementary resources:
- Primer: Outlines the case for mission-aligned investing and its relevance to health foundations, including the financial, ethical, and reputational dimensions
- FAQ: Supports internal discussions and addresses common questions boards and staff most commonly raise when beginning this work
- Investment Beliefs and Commitments Examples: Provides adaptable language that foundations can draw on to update policies, governance documents and investment mandates
