Advancing awareness, support and adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and technology in Canada’s health services sector
Project Objective
To advance awareness and use of lower-carbon transportation options, such as energy-efficient technologies and practices and lower-carbon vehicles and fuels in Canada.
Project Details
By embracing Canada’s health sector, the project team will incite sector stakeholders to adopt ZEVs and ZEV technology.
The project team will work with multiple stakeholder groups including senior administrative leaders, medical staff, support staff such as facility/engineering/energy champions/purchasing and finance, visitors and patients as well as vendors and contractors of Canadian health care organisations.
We will advance awareness and knowledge of ZEVs and the infrastructure required for their support, increase the understanding and capacity of the sector with regard to charging and fuelling infrastructure, and provide opportunities and resources to enhance understanding and adoption of ZEV technology.

Z.E.V. Case Studies
Physician loses patience with high price of gas, adopts ZEV technology
"Dr. Pascal Gellrich is a physician based in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia where his work in emergency medicine, offshore telemedicine, and addiction medicine frequently finds him commuting hundreds of kilometers each week between his home and Halifax, Digby and Bridgewater. With monthly gasoline charges topping $500, and the lease on his gasoline-powered mid-sized Subaru crossover about to expire, he felt the time was right to reinvigorate his search for a new, more energy-efficient vehicle". Sunnybrook electrifies to meet zero-emissions vehicle challenge
"Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is Canada’s largest trauma centre and has a proud history of environmental stewardship which has helped to reduce the environmental impact of hospital activities and allowed Sunnybrook to better realize its vision of inventing the future of health care.
The five keys to their success include: energy conservation, green procurement, waste management, an awareness and education campaign and sustainable transportation which in 2017 saw them begin their quest to add zero-emission vehicle (electric vehicle/ZEV) charging stations into their infrastructure".

Z.E.V. Fact Sheets
Selecting the most appropriate zero-emissions/electric vehicle charging hardware involves considering the health care organisation’s desired features, vendor equipment specifications and operating network. Organisations have the option to fully own and operate the charging stations or out-source to a third-party owner and operator.

There are multiple ways of offering charging stations at your health care workplace. They can be free for employees or employees can be charged a fee for using the stations. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages, and this determination should be based on your goals and reasons for installing the chargers in the first place.

Z.E.V. Federal Incentives and Reports
Federal, provincial and territorial governments are working to develop a national Zero-Emissions Vehicle Strategy. It’s a critical opportunity to put Canada in the EV game. To succeed, it will need to accomplish these four things:
The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow as market share in the 2nd quarter reached more than 3% in the country, a significant increase of just under 1% over the last year. Read the full report here.
"We identified 96 policies that directly or indirectly aim to increase electric vehicle sales in Canada. Of these policies, 8 have expired, 62 are active, and another 26 have been proposed (as of October 2016). Read the full report here
Electric-mobility may be a key component in a successful transition toward deep greenhousegas (GHG) reductions (Williams et al., 2012). This report considers the potential market for plug-in
electric vehicles (PEVs) in Canada’s passenger (light-duty) vehicle sector. Read the full report here
The higher cost of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) can make it more difficult to adopt this clean technology. The iZEV program and new tax write-offs for businesses will help make it more affordable.
Today’s electric vehicles are becoming more mainstream due to lower prices, faster charging times and increased driving ranges How do you choose the right electric vehicle? Check out the hydroOne EV buyers guide here.
